The Lone Star State

I am going to go over some of the rules once again for the AI n00bs that chose this year to audition. Here are some facts we've gleaned over the last several years:

01) No generally means no. It does NOT mean you beg or plead or sing another song. It does NOT mean to get argumentative with the judges (although we all suspect that you've been coached to do so to "make good tv"). No means you shut up and leave the audition room.... either willingly or escorted. If you're really bad, they'll throw you in handcuffs (although we suspect a few of you may just enjoy that). This is not to discourage you from trying again, just to discourage you from trying again right now.

02) Louder does NOT necessarily mean better. Actually, if you're already off-key, it will put you farther off-key (or sharp or flat) by that much more.

03)"I'm singing an original song" is generally going to receive groans from the judges. Why? Because a good 98% of the original songs they hear are nothing more than crap. You may say that song is in key, but truly... if a cat in heat an elephant in musth sounds better, then it's out of tune. We won't even harp on your lyric writing skills.

04) (this one for the judges) Do not judge a book by its cover. It's amazing what a good dust-jacket will do to a plain cover on a book.

That said, here's the Styx Picks for Dallas. I wasn't overly wowed by many this time around.

Rule number 4 was broken by these two (with some success):

Lloyd Thomas: He wasn't bad, not great but has potential. I was pleasantly surprised at his audition. Possible we have the next Reuben this year?

Dave Pittman: Dave has Tourettes and with that comes the clicks and ticks and such which can be off putting if you aren't aware there's a problem. He reminds me a bit of Jim Nabors. Mr Nabors has that really strange talking voice but when he opens his mouth... well something beautiful emerges and you'd never suspect it with the way he speaks. Dave was the same way. His voice wasn't as beautiful as Mr Nabor's, however when he sang.... well there wasn't a twitch or click or anything. Again, a reminder to never judge the book by its look.

The 3rd rule was broke, rather successfully I might add, by the next two. They will be worth watching, although I'm not entirely certain for how long.

Kimberly Carver: I loved the jazz sound in her voice. Yeah, she was a bit dated with the audition but any gal that can make the guest judge go to odds with Simon to keep the auditioner in the running is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Todrick Hall: Ok. The audition song was a bit cutesy to be taken seriously. However, he has a beautiful voice and some nice control going for him. He's definitely one to be watching when the Hollywood rounds show up. If he can get to the competition stage (and the stress doesn't wash him out), we may just have a contender.

We haven't had a really decent AAM in the last few years and haven't had one win since season 2. Is this the year for the AAM or is American Idol seriously stacking the deck with female talent? I'm not even going to try and call this until we get a couple weeks into competition. By all rights, this should be a Caucasian girl's year as we haven't had one since Carrie in season 4. However, last year should have been the year for them or the AAM, and what did we see? A back to back year of the Caucasian male! I'd like to say this is definitely the year of girl power but I am wondering if my opinion is being skewed because I've already started peeking in the nefarious site's pages and they've noted that most of the guys being sent through to competition (gotta love those spoilers!) are kinda fugly (honestly, I think some of them are cute in their own way!) and what tweentard or "frau" (older female fan) is going to vote for fugly?? Time will tell. I mean look at last year, the girls were nuts for the flamboyantly gay male competitor and you can be damned sure they are what got him that far (well that and his talent...). They know they can't have him (much to the relief of husbands and boyfriends everywhere), but it didn't stop them from squealing and fawning over him in a fangirly way (myself included).

Up next: Denver.

LA auditions

Ok, Im feeling better this week compared to last week. However I'm beginning to suspect I'll need to take myself off the computer the day before show day to make sure I'm running at 100%. Like I told my good buddy in Chicago, thank goodness for detailed notes (not to mention the wonderful others who blog and post the videos)!

This episode we were in Los Angeles, although there were a few moments when I could have sworn we were in San Francisco. We had Avril Lavigne on day one and Katy Perry for day two.

Here are tonight's Styx Picks:

Jim Ranger: He chose to sing an original song that he'd penned. Now, all AI addicts can tell you that this is ~usually~ a horrid decision as the judges always think the original songs suck. However, this one wasn't all that bad. In fact, it was quite good. I wasn't totally blown away, but there is definitely something there. I do worry if he's going to get through Hollywood though. Hollywood is a very stressful time for the contestants. This will be compounded with the fact that he has 3 kids, a wife AND his church (he's a worship minister) back home. He's going to need to make a decision on what is more important because if he wins this, he won't be home for a while.

Mary Powers: Oooh. Now this one I really liked. I could see myself getting behind her in competition. She's a little Allison, a little Dilana and I can absolutely see me buying an album in the future from her. She picked a very difficult song and did it well.

Tasha Layton: Of the two notable church people (see Jim Ranger), this minister will more than likely have an easier time during the Hollywood rounds. I'm only basing this upon the fact there was no mention of kids or a spouse. Well that and her voice was just that much better than Jim's.

Chris Golightly: Nice voice, good control and wasn't afraid to make the song his own.

And for some humor, before we leave for the night... the one contestant that actually made Katy Perry say that she felt dirty. We've all seen her videos, and if SHE'S saying that she feels dirty.... you know it's bad. I still canNOT believe they got clearance for this song!!!

(watch it while you can because you KNOW YouTube will have this yanked down by tomorrow)

Next up: Dallas with Joe Jonas and Neil Patrick Harris.

Auditions in the Windy City and the Sunshine State

I so meant to get these done last week but I was fighting a super bad headache last Tuesday and still wasn't 100% come Wednesday (or Thursday for that matter). I've come to the conclusion that it's time for another eye exam It's only been 2-3 years since the last one and since it's getting to the point where I may have to actually WEAR my glasses for computer work (my eyes need help for distances, not reading or computer work because the item Im focusing on at the time is too close for the prescription).... oh it's hell getting older.

Anyhow, these are the ones I have my eye on (or should I say ear on?) from the Chicago(Shania) and Orlando(Kristen Chenoweth) auditions.

Chicago
Kaitlyn Epperly (She's not bad, not great...very nice. Definitely worth a second look.)

John Park (I really liked this one. Such a beautiful voice and very good control. He has potential to get through Hollywood *IF* he doesnt crack under the pressure.)

Paige DeChausse (not bad, has potential but I don't think she'll get through the Hollywood rounds this time)

Orlando (no guest judge on the second day)
Seth Rollins (He wasn't bad, left me wanting to listen to more, alot more)

Jermaine Purifoy (Very nice voice, another one I wouldn't mind hearing more from)

Shelby Dressel (Got alot of potential, she's got a beautiful alto, but she's going to need to get past her insecurity/ self-conciousness to get past the Hollywood rounds. She'll definitely need to WOW, but at this point there were several much better.)

Matt Lawrence (Nice control. I'm hoping this one gets through to the competition rounds)

Three that were grouped together that might bear watching, I'd need to see more in order to make a decision. First opinion is "eh".

Janell Wheeler, Brittany Starr Jaymes and Kasi Bedford

And for entertainment purposes (he didnt get through to Hollywood), a couple of the places I've been to reading have been floating the rumor that this one was a plant to stir up a boring program: Jarrod Norrell. No means no, dude.

Next entry: The LA auditions.

The only thing Hot about Hotlanta is the temperature

Certainly did NOT describe the talent this time around, that's for sure. Actually, now that I think of it.... maybe it wasn't so bad. Tuesday averaged one like for less than every 30 minutes or so. Wednesday's episode averaged one like for every 30 minutes. Even with that, HotLanta left me rather luke-warm and wishing I had opened my bottle of Riesling.....

Bearing watching (simply because we didn't see enough of them to really give an opinion about):
Miriam Lemnouni, Noel Reese and Tisha Holland:

My picks for the night?
Jermaine Sellers (his demeanor reminds me alot of George Huff):

Mallorie Haley (not too bad...don't know how far she'll make it though. I know my NYSis will hate this one.)

Bryan Walker (can't decide who I like best... him or Jermaine)

Tuesday night we go to ChiCAgo and we'll have Shania as the guest judge.

And it begins

So tonight was the first episode of American Idol season 9 and we were in Boston with Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham in the guest judge seat. I sat, watched and took notes as always but I have to question whether it was simply out of habit or because I was genuinely interested...or was it that I was curious as to how things were going to run without the effervescent Paula on the panel.

We had our usual suspects that deserved the rotten tomatoes that Deanna had suggested in my main blog to have on hand. If I had had them on hand, I may just have used them even though it would have meant shampooing the carpet. Before anyone suggests eggs, we don't have them here either as I use the liquid substitute.... gotta be careful of the cholesterol ya know.

There were a few that weren't too bad though and a small handful that are going to warrant watching if only to see if they make it through the Hollywood rounds. Looking at MJ's site, it looks like we enjoyed many of the same ones. Here are my favs this time around:

Ashley Rodriguez:

Mike Davis:

Katie Stevens:

Justin Williams (this was my panty-worthy pick of the night):

Leah Laurenti:

Wednesday's episode is in Atlanta where it looks like we'll see Mary J Blige in the guest spot.
